Synopsis

In 1987, after a few years trying to break into the adult movie industry, Brandy Alexandre finally got her chance to make her first hardcore video. She stayed in the industry for nearly six years—2,000 days—and Shot on Video is her story, told from the inside, with the benefit of hindsight.

The memoir moves through the industry's home video boom years with a clear-eyed look at the economics, personalities, absurdities, and occasional genuine warmth behind a rapidly changing business. It begins with her early life and motivations, and ends with her career unexpectedly fading to black, and moving on without regrets. Brandy was not a victim. She was also not naive—well, maybe a little. But above all, she was paying attention and living in a world few outsiders ever saw.

Shot on Video is not a tell-all about sleaze, glamour, or the life of a superstar. It is the story of one of the thousands who helped build an industry during its most transformative era: exercising agency, exploring creativity, and forming an identity. It is also brutal, and frequently funny.

Brandy Alexandre is a first-time author. She spent the VHS boom years in the adult movie industry, and was one of the first women in adult video to write, produce, direct, and star in her own features—not as a superstar, but as a working professional navigating a male-dominated industry with grit, humor, and creative control. Between 1987 and 1992, she appeared in over 60 adult videos. She earned AVN Award nominations for Best Director (Cheeks 5: Cop A Feel), Best Supporting Actress (Mystic Pieces), and Best Sex Scene (Making Tracks), but never won. She was called "best butt in the biz" and known as everyone's favorite second choice—a rank-and-file performer who kept showing up, kept creating, and kept pushing for more.
